How to Activate or Unblock Your Credit Card: Step-by-Step Guide

Whether you’ve just received a new credit card or suddenly find your existing one isn’t working, the solution is simpler than you think. From activation to unblocking and reactivation, this blog walks you through every step, online and offline, so you always have access to your credit card.

Step 1: How to Activate Your Credit Card

Following RBI mandate, new credit cards are delivered in an inactive state for your safety. To start using yours, you will first need to activate it and set a secure PIN.

Option A: Using Mobile App (Most Recommended)

  • Download your issuer’s credit card app (e.g., BOBCARD Mobile App).
  • Register using your registered mobile number and OTP.
  • Go to ‘Card Services’ or ‘My Cards’.
  • Select ‘Generate PIN’.
  • Enter the OTP again and choose a secure 4-digit PIN.

Option B: Using Desktop Portal

  • Visit your credit card issuer’s official portal (e.g., www.bobcard.co.in).
  • Click ‘Register Card’ or similar.
  • Follow the same steps as you did for app to activate your card, set card controls and to generate your card PIN.

Step 2: Enable Online and International Usage

By default, new cards are active only for domestic in-store (POS) and ATM use, as per RBI guidelines. To activate Domestic Online or International (POS, Online & ATM) transactions, follow these steps:

  • Login to your app or portal.
  • Navigate to “Card Limit Management” or “Manage Usage”
  • Enable transaction types and set limits as per your requirements

Sometimes, even after activation, you may use your card only to see “Transaction Declined.” This can happen if your card has been temporarily or permanently blocked by the issuer. Blocked cards are frustrating, especially when it happens without notice. But you can easily fix it in just a few clicks. Why Was My Credit Card Blocked Unexpectedly?

Here are the most common reasons:

  • Unusual Transaction Patterns: any sudden international swipe or out-of-pattern spending can trigger a security block.
  • Wrong PIN Entries: multiple incorrect PIN attempts can auto-block your card.
  • Overuse of Credit Limit: frequently maxing out your card or crossing the limit may trigger a freeze.
  • Missed Payments: defaulting or delaying bill payments can restrict further usage.
  • KYC Documents Pending: if your PAN, Aadhaar, or address proof isn’t submitted, banks may block the card.
  • Inactive for Months: cards left unused may be auto-disabled
  • Fraud Alerts or Lost Card Reports: if a card is reported lost/stolen or flagged for high-risk usage, it will be blocked.
  • Technical Issues or Compliance Checks: system glitches or compliance flags may lead to temporary blocks.

Tip: Regular usage, timely bill payments, and updated KYC keep your card safe from unwanted blocks.

However, if this happens, don’t panic as there are multiple ways to get your card unblocked and bring it back in action.

 

How to Unblock Your Credit Card

  • Login to your app or portal
  • Look for “Card Unblocking” or similar prompts. If eligible, just follow the steps and your card will be unblocked.
  • Update KYC if requested
  • Call the official helpline (e.g., BOBCARD: 1800 1210 / 1800 2090), confirm your identity and request unblocking
  • Make a branch visit (if required). Don’t forget to carry ID proof and address proofs if card is blocked for KYC or regulatory blocks. Call helpline numbers to understand the issue before your visit.
